I slumped over my small desk in the cramped office we had on-site at our yard, contemplating taking a break and walking through the cold to the coffee shop for a proper drink, not the swill that came out of the ancient machine in the corner. Today was the kind of day that called for coffee with caramel syrup and whipped cream on top.

Zach and Arata were at the Trenton Street job, while Cole was kicking off a new project on Myrtle Street, a client we’d managed to salvage despite our five-day radio silence. They were an alpha pack too, and more than understanding when they’d found out our reason for dropping off the grid was an unexpected omega heat.

I was still sorting through supply issues that the sudden shuffling or cancellation of jobs had caused, and there wasn’t enough coffee in the world to make me work through this logistical nightmare any faster. Especially when my mind kept drifting back to seeing Amy dance again three nights ago. To the morning after, when we’d made breakfast together and eaten it around the table like a bonded pack before Cole dropped her at her apartment to get ready to meet her aunts.

I knew they were keeping her busy, and I knew Roxy was being a harsh taskmaster at Allure for whatever stupid reason she’d come up with, but I was struggling with the lack of Amy in our lives, particularly today.

Every day that passed where we couldn’t see her, when she didn’t bear our marks, our bites, was torture. The need to make her ours, to show the world she belonged to us, was growing impossible to ignore. Especially when she was still dancing at Allure, where anyone could see and wrongly assume she wasn’t taken.

Mate her.

The intrusive thoughts were relentless. We would see Amy on the weekend at Allure, and hopefully more than that, but it felt like forever away.

Maybe I should message her and ask if she was working tonight?

With a groan, I stood, snagging my jacket off the back of the chair and shrugging it on to walk to the coffee shop. Maybe the cold air would clear my head enough to figure these dates and numbers out. To focus on work rather than the omega I wasn’t sure I could have.

Before I could leave the office, my phone rang loudly in my pocket, and I pulled it out with a heavy sigh, not recognizing the number on the screen. Someone else calling to yell at me, no doubt.

“Kaito Knight speaking,” I grunted, too irritated about my thwarted coffee run for niceties.

“Kaito Knight,” an annoyingly jovial voice replied. “This is Ray Lawson. How are you doing?”

That gave me pause. Pack Lawson were some of our biggest competitors, and they were far bigger than our little family-run operation.

“What can I do for you, Ray?” I asked, heading back around my desk and dropping into my chair.

“A better question would be, what I can do for you?” he laughed to himself.
